On our way to Colorado…Fire & Perspective…

Your are probably wondering what the heck happened to me over the past few weeks…after all it’s really only a 2-3 day trip to Colorado. Well here is our “Move to Colorado Story”…

Well, our journey began on Saturday, March 5th. We made it past some stormy wet weather and avoided the snowfall in the Sierras by Saturday evening. We even made it to Winnemucca, Nevada by Saturday night. This was pretty good since we had a loaded 26′ Penske truck pulling a car trailer, a 1984 Itasca motorhome and our Suburban. Also 2 toddlers plus 4 adults. My husband Galen was pulling the Penske, Charles his brother was driving the motorhome and Aimee and I were switching off driving the Suburban.

We left Winnemucca about 10 AM and drove as fast as the Penske would allow, about 55mph, average. This was hard to accept when we were passing signs like this:

80 mph

After lunch and potty breaks for the kids, we took about a 5-1/2 hour drive and turned it into 8 hours arriving in Salt Lake City, UT about 6:30pm. Lucky for us we found a Cracker Barrel to eat at! 🙂

Here’s a picture that Aimee took, love this.

We bought a couple of cute toy souvenirs for the kids, a plastic wind up robot for Wyatt, a cute light up Joy with candy (from the Inside Out movie) and a giant plastic egg (with toys & stickers inside for later!) We enjoyed our HUGE dinner and felt like pressing on for at least another hour and a half. The kids were doing great and the weather was just lightly snowing. We felt like it was safe enough to keep going and try to make it to Evanston, WY, which was about an hour an a half drive. We got back in the motorhome, Charles driving, me, and Sophia and Wyatt. Our dog Hunny, who is 14 years old wasn’t doing so good. She threw up a couple times so I was sitting on the floor petting her and just loving on her. The kids were happy in their car seats watching Wreck-It-Ralph.

About 25 minutes out of Salt Lake City, at around 8:30pm (in Parley’s Canyon) my sister in law, Aimee (who was driving our suburban behind us) got on the walkie talkie. She said “Guys, the motor home is smoking REAL bad, you gotta pull over”. I glanced at the side of the road and saw the snow accumulating. I thought, no way. We are on a hill, and a turn, and if we pull this rig off the highway, we might have to get a tow truck to get us out! I told her I didn’t think it was a good spot to pull over. Aimee came back, “No, you need to pull over NOW”. Her voice said it all. I yelled over the roar of the motorhome to Charles, my brother in law, “Charles pull over!”. He said, “Here?? Are you sure”, “YES! Pull over!”.  We got off the road and cut the engine. Immediately we smelled the smoke and opened the windows. It was so strong, I said let’s get the kids out. I grabbed my almost 4-year old Wyatt as he dropped his new robot, “My ROBOT!” he exclaimed, I bent down to retrieve his precious robot, and headed out to make about a 40 foot trek to where Aimee parked the Suburban in front of us. The snow soaked my Uggs and the cold was creeping into my skin. I was focused on getting my kids to safety, that’s all that mattered. I put him in the back seat (no carseat) and ran back to get Sophie out. As I got to the door of the motorhome I heard someone yell out “Get away, it’s on fire!”. I looked to where I heard the voice, it was Charles, about 30 feet away towards the embankment holding Sophie in his arms. I sighed relief, my babies were safe. I screamed for our dog Hunny, “Hunny!!” Charles yelled back, “I’ve got her! Come here! It’s on FIRE!”

I was shocked. Could this really be happening? My ex-firefighter days kicked in and I thought, I could probably put it out. First I need important stuff…my purse! My phone is in there and my driver license, other super important papers, cards from family…I went in through a lot of smoke. I instantly thought of the Kindle which was playing the kids movie…I thought of our DSLR Nikon camera, our video camera, but I couldn’t grab it all. I kept thinking “just get OUT”. The whole thing could blow (just like in the movies, right?) and my kids would be motherless. I grabbed my purse from the floor where I was sitting and snatched up the fire extinguisher on my way out the door. As I headed to where Charles, Sophia and Hunny were I looked at the extinguisher. There was no pin! I guess we forgot to inspect that prior to this. I wasn’t sure how to work it without a pin. I just remembered PASS from fire fighting training. Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep, but there was no “pull”! I chucked the extinguisher somewhere in the snow, took Sophie from Charles and turned around to see a small fire under the motorhome. Oh no. This was really happening. Charles said we need to call 911, or I did…I can’t really remember. The adrenaline kicked in and we hurried back to the suburban. This time Aimee was outside of it and I yelled to her, “call 911!!”. She was like “what?”, so I repeated “call 911! The motorhome is on FIRE!”. It was then I realized my cell phone was left on the floor of the motorhome.

I hopped in the car with the kids and hugged them close. By then Galen walked the 1/4 mile back to where we were after pulling the Penske truck off to the side of the road. He asked “is everyone ok?” Yes. Yes we were. I kept repeating we’re ok. We’re all ok. Wyatt wanted to get out and he said he had to go potty but I told him it wasn’t safe. We had to stay in the car because this was an emergency. I was hoping and praying it wasn’t that bad.  As Aimee gave the 911 operator our location and told them our motorhome was on fire, reality was beginning to set in. I was hoping first responders would get there fast.

We sat in the suburban waiting. While comforting the kids, I looked behind me and saw this…

It didn’t take long and our poor old 1984 Itasca motorhome that my dad gave us, who purchased it from Lou Drake (an old family friend and neighbor), was fully engulfed in flames. I told my son, “look Wyatt, our motorhome is on fire, it’s an emergency”. He wasn’t sad, none of us were, yet.

By this time onlookers had stopped to check on us. Some took pictures and some took videos. Really people? I guess it is “awesome” to see a 22′ motorhome on fire? Well, I didn’t think so. We were actually worried for those individuals that stopped to check on us. Some people parked eerily close to the motorhome. We were afraid it would blow. I completely forgot about the propane tank. Galen and Charles yelled from outside the suburban, “Get back, we’re all ok! Get away!”, hoping they would see we were all ok and get back in their vehicles. It took about 15 minutes I think for the fire fighters to get there. They put out the fire while we waited in the car.

Galen and Charles checked with the state trooper and gave him our info. They said they would call a wrecker to take it to a place back in Salt Lake City. The trooper told him they could go through the wreckage here or back at the yard to see if there was anything we could salvage.  The guys decided to stay and go through the wreckage instead of losing time driving. Aimee and I took the kids in the car sans car seats since they were in the fire. I buckled Wyatt next to me and held Sophia, buckled on my lap. We drove to the nearest town, Park City and found a Hampton Inn. Aimee explained what happened and that we needed a room, we just lost our motorhome in a fire. They said they didn’t allow pets and Aimee broke down in tears. Are you kidding me? We just lost a TON of our personal effects and property and had no clothes, nothing and you’re turning us away? I won’t ever stay at a Hampton again.

Luckily there was a Best Western across the street that allowed pets and even better they had a cooler full of beverages and beer next to check-in. Boy did Aimee and I need a cold one. $2 each, nice. As Aimee got us checked in, the kids found a fountain surrounded by little rocks, like an indoor rock garden. Thankfully they were mesmerized, because I felt out of it. My head swirled with things that we needed at the store. What were we going to do now? We had no car seats, no clothes, no plan and another 8-10 hours to go to get to Colorado Springs.

We got to our room and Aimee was making a list of things and ready to go to a 24-hour Wal-Mart nearby. She was amazingly composed and I just felt fuzzy, and not from the beer. She left with a list of all the kid stuff we would need.

I didn’t know what to do with myself or the kids but wanted some normalcy. I know, a bath for them would help relax them. After the bath I wrapped them up in blankets with a makeshift towel for Sophie as a diaper. Soon after, Aimee got back with sippy cups, milk, snacks, diapers, wipes, clothes, deodorant, dog food for Hunny and baby blankets. She was so sweet to think of their blankets. I was saddened because they lost their favorite, soft baby blankets. I was going to save them as keepsakes.

The guys got back at about midnight. They told us they grabbed what suitcases were left, even though they were charred. They were able to get our fire safe out which was stuck in the shower, under water no less, but Galen pulled it out. Everything was in tact inside of it. (Side note: Get a fire safe – they work – fire and waterproof) I asked him about the car seats…melted. The Kindle Fire? Gone. What about our clothes? The camera, the other stuff. Most of it was damaged or melted. Smoke damage, water damage. The toys? We had most of the kids favorite toys. Melted. I was thankful I grabbed Wyatt’s robot on the way out, it was his only toy left. (of course we had more in the moving truck but his favorites that he would ask about were gone). Galen handed me my make-up bag which he thought was his overnight bag. It was charred. I opened it up to find all my make-up brushes melted and everything charred and smoky. I kept about 4 things and threw the bag outside our room. The smell was so smoky and had a sour chemical smell.

We stayed up talking about what we would do. It was about 3 AM and we decided to buy flights for Aimee, myself and the kids, leaving at 1PM. The guys would take the moving truck and the suburban and drive the rest of the way. We would get a shuttle in the morning at 1oAM and head to SLC airport so the guys wouldn’t have to backtrack.

It was 3:30 AM as Galen and I laid in bed going over all of the things we lost but so, so thankful that we were all SAFE. No one was hurt and we had our family, the most important thing ever.

We decided to call our other family in the morning, no sense in worrying everyone late at night and waking them up.

Somehow we were able to sleep. We set the alarm for 8AM so we could get everything together and get down to breakfast. In the morning Galen made some phone calls to family. He spoke with my Dad and his Dad. We got a text from my mom later that said “I’m so sorry for what happened. My heart goes out to you all.” I lost it. I hadn’t cried, but that did me in. It hit me what happened and just how much we lost. Later I realized that my mom’s quilt she made for my daughter was in there. I packed it last because she had just finished it and sewed on the patch with a dedication to Sophia Colleen from Grandma Colleen. I was so saddened. My mom assured me she was working on making another. She sent us clothes and gift cards right away to get the kids some clothes. Grandma Pami in Colorado Springs also got us some clothes for Sophie since we lost almost all of her clothes. We’re thankful to all our family that has sent us gift cards and thoughtful gifts. Even Aimee’s mother in law sent us a sweet card and gift cards.

At the airport Aimee made some calls to friends about clothes for the kids and car seats. I was just taken aback by her thoughtfulness. I wasn’t thinking of any of that so I was grateful she was thinking! 😉 When we arrived to Grandma and Grandpa’s house in the Springs, Sophie had some clothes. Aimee had a huge bag of clothes and even a snow suit for Sophie and snow clothes & boots for Wyatt. She even gave me clothes and an awesome snow jacket! We are so thankful for our family that reached out to us. We lost most of our clothes in the fire. Here are some pictures from the damage. Surprisingly you can see my jewelry box in the far right picture, completely charred on the outside. However, all of my earrings, bracelets and necklaces inside were miraculously fine. I was so thankful because I had some very special bracelets that my mother gave me and earrings that my mother in law has given me over the years. My heart goes out to those that have lost a home to fire. I now know what that feels like. We lost a small home. We lost things, but they were just that, “things”. We have our dear family and we are forever grateful for that. We are also so thankful that we still had our home owner’s insurance which will cover most of our losses.

And here are a few more pictures of the shell of a motorhome which was left:

There was also an article and pictures in the Fox 13 news which we found later. Here is a link to that> I-80 Motorhome Fire

Galen did ask the fire fighters if they could determine the cause of the fire but was told at this point probably not. They feel that it was either the gas line or electrical.

On a happy note, here are my kiddos, safe at Grandma Pami’s and Papa’s, playing in the snow with their new snow clothes and me, sporting my new jacket from my sister in law. 🙂 Hugging our babies a little tighter each night.

Paper Craft Crew Challenge #183 – Stampin’ Up What I Love Thank You

Hi There!

I was able to make a sweet card the other day for the Paper Craft Crew Challenge. Since we’ve been packing like crazy, I’ve just found the time to post this! This week was a color challenge. Usually these challenges do exactly that…challenge me, but I turn to Stampin’ Up’s IB & C (Idea Book & Catalog) and I find a card I love. Then I just swap the colors for what is required.

I loved the card on page 119 so I copied it but used the challenge colors. I even used the same baker’s twine in Old Olive. I love the way the outline looks using the black Staz-On ink. That’s a must have for stamping on vellum. It comes in White too!

You can get the BOTANICAL GARDENS DESIGNER VELLUM STACK & the What I Love stamp set FREE in the Sale-A-Bration catalog when you spend $100! You get 1 item FREE with every $50 purchased! 🙂

PhotoGrid_1456503632006Hope you enjoyed my card! Thanks for stopping by!  Here are the products I used to make it:

Mojo Monday #436 – You’re So Sweet!

Welcome back to another Mojo Monday challenge! Today I made a card for the Mojo Monday #436 challenge. I’m a little late as the Linky closes in about an hour, but hey, sometimes I do my best work procrastinating. Also I heard recently, if you’re not procrastinating, you’re wasting time. 😉 I really love that.

Here is the cute and fun sketch over at Mojo:

I just love the circles and banner elements! It was a fun and simple card to run with. I made a You’re So Sweet card using the Honeycomb Happiness stamp set from the Sale-A-Bration catalog. You can still get this stamp set FREE with a $50 purchase before tax and shipping!

Can I just say I LOVE the It’s My Party enamel dots??? These cuties come in 3 great colors, Bermuda Bay, Crushed Curry and Melon Mambo.  They look so sweet, like little candies on my card!

I love that all of Stampin’ Up’s products coordinate so well! I had no problem matching the card stock to the embellishments to the ink! There are some really cute honeycomb embellishments in the Occasions catalog too. I didn’t use them this time around but they are adorable!

Just a little update on our move…we have 5 days to go. OMG! Today I packed up about 4 boxes of TOYS…and they have maybe 1 more. That’s way too many toys if you ask me. I see a donation run or a garage sale in our future! So we will be traveling about 1300 miles in a motorhome with 2 toddlers. I am NOT ready lol. Well, sort of. I have pinned several “traveling with toddlers” articles and ideas. I’m preparing some things that I hope will make it a smooth trip for everyone. I hope to write about our experience and what worked and didn’t work after we get there! I’ll connect a link to that post after I write it. Our family threw us a little going away party at my sister’s last night and that was really nice. (Except for a few dysfunctional family moments I won’t get into…) A little bittersweet, but we are excited to go!

Thanks for stopping by!

CYCI108 Challenge -Simple, Elegant Wedding Card

I played along with the Can You Case It Challenge 108 this week! The sketch is so simple and I loved it! Do you ever have a picture of a card in your head…but then you create it and you’re like, “Well, that didn’t turn out like I thought it would”…yeah me too. However, this card was different! I LOVE the way it turned out! It’s simple and elegant.

I used the February Paper Pumpkin kit, Hello Sunshine. SUCH a fun kit! One of Stampin’ Up’s best! I just added some Blushing Bride card stock, Basic Black card stock, It’s My Party design paper and washi tape. I used the mini heart punch from the Itty Bitty Accents Punch pack and punched out a little heart from the excess gold foil adhesive sheet from the kit! I also punched a Blushing Bride glimmer paper one. So cute! This is the perfect wedding card…now who’s getting married this year?? 😉

Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

And here are the products I used for this card: (One thing though, if you get the refill Paper Pumpkin kit, it will not have a stamp set or ink – but that’s OK, you can use ANY stamps you have!)

Need a Do-Over…

So, from the kitchen this morning, while making my morning coffee, I heard that sound…that digusting sound of something being choked up from the back of an animal’s throat. My dog was throwing up! Uggghhhh

I grabbed a few paper towels and a plastic bag and ran to my bedroom where she was. My 3-1/2 year old was on the bed watching toy videos on his Kindle. He says the doggie threw up. (As if I could NOT hear that noise from anywhere in the house) I asked him where it is and he stands on the bed and points directly at it, “There!”. Ok so I start wiping up the bulk of it (looks like corn…wow when did she even get corn – I’m dumbfounded, plus we haven’t had corn for at least 3 days) My son gags. Then I inhale and I start to gag. Wow, possibly the second worst smell, number one being dog poop. My son gags again. Oh my gosh, is he going to throw up? He’s on my bed…please don’t throw up. I tell him to hide under the covers where it’s safe. Can I hide too? I continue to wipe up and get the Bissell carpet cleaner. Ok whew, all done. Now I REALLY need that morning coffee.

I head back to the kitchen to add my creamer and of course whipped cream. I open the fridge and here comes said toddler. He grabs a can of 7-up and goes to find his cup and straw. Soda at 9am? I don’t THINK SO. “No Wyatt”, I tell him, “You can have apple juice”. He runs from the kitchen yelling and goes back to our room. I can hear him reasoning with himself out loud and saying I need my Dada. Which of course he does because mommy is mean and said no. I wonder if this attitude comes from not seeing his dada last night. Galen worked late and then went out with the guys for pizza to say goodbye to one of his employees, so he got home a little late and Wyatt was already in bed.

I just feel like if this is any indication of how the day is going to go, I’m headed back to bed.

Oh wait, I can’t because I do have a 2 year old, still in her crib. So I reheat my coffee, add all the “bad stuff” and head to the computer where I must vent about my morning so I can have a clear head for the day. Well, “try” to have a clear head. Most of the time I have about 100 thoughts running through my mind at all times. I might write again later if I have time. However, I hope to get a shower when the 2 year old naps since I have a girl’s night out tonight. Wine and coloring. I’m SO looking forward to that. Then I have to make a sympathy card for a dear friend that just lost her father.

Well, it’s time to make breakfast and get Sophie up. Hope you have a blessed day that doesn’t involve any doggie throw up. Or toddler screaming. 🙂

Stampin Up Happy Anniversary – Wildflower Fields

Just a quick card for today! I needed a quick anniversary card and I love the Number of Years stamp set as a go to! I also love the Wildflower Fields stamp set which you can get free for Sale-A-Bration with a $50 purchase! For my inspiration for this card, I used this card by Craft-somnia Momma. Again, I found it on Pinterest!

I used our watercolor paper for the background and just used an aqua painter dipped in Calypso Coral and drew lines across. I didn’t care if they were straight or not since that’s the beauty of it! I also used Pear Pizzazz and Crushed Curry ink pads. Aren’t those little wire bows darling? I finished it off with some cute accessories like the Metallic Sequins and the Tea Lace Paper Doilies.

You’ll notice below my new format for the products I used. It’s a “shopping list”. I had to switch to this since My Stampin Blog is now charging users $9.95 per MONTH. That’s just not feasible for me right now so I decided to just jot down the list of products, item #’s and their price for you. You can then click and print, save to your computer, mobile device, etc.

Also, since it is so small, I’ll try to list only the stamps and the accessories on it so I can use a bigger font. Otherwise the more items I put on there, the smaller it has to be. Hope this helps some of you!

Thanks for stopping by! See you soon.

Mojo Monday #435 – It’s My Party Birthday Card

Hi Everyone!

A new week has gone and that means it’s time for another Mojo Monday sketch challenge!

Julee over at Mojo created a fun panel sketch for us to play with. You should play along too and use up some of your stash! 😉 If you haven’t played in challenges before and you’re not sure what to do, just send me an email and I’ll help you through it! They are fun and sometimes there’s even a contest to win prizes! 🙂

I used the It’s My Party design paper stack for this card. This paper pad is such a great deal! You get 48 – 12″x 12″ sheets of design paper for $26.00. That’s only $0.54/sheet! You need this paper, it’s so cute and has some great designs! Plus there is a whole slough of It’s My Party products to coordinate with this lovely paper.

I made this card for my awesome husband. He’ll only be 33 in a couple weeks! (wish I was still in my 30’s!) Maybe then I’d have enough energy to chase my toddlers around lol!

I used the Party with Cake clear mount stamp set for this card and the Number of Years bundle (has stamp set and framelits!). The panels of design paper are cut at 2″ x 4″. The center Mint Macaron square is 3-1/4″ x 3-1/2″. The Whisper White square is 3″ x 3-1/4″.  I also used a hint of the  clear Wink of Stella on the numbers, can you see the shimmer below? I just LOVE this stuff!

The ink pads I used for stamping:

  • Basic Black Archival
  • Melon Mambo
  • Mint Macaron
  • Crushed Curry

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you get to do something crafty today!

Stampin Up Party with Cake – Birthday or Celebration Card

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to share this quick card I made using the Party with Cake and Timeless Textures stamp sets. My inspiration for this card was in the Occasions catalog on page 3! I love using the beautiful designs by Stampin Up and then modifying them how I like.

Ok, I cannot say how much I love this Timeless Textures stamp set. You need it. It’s super versatile and makes the coolest images. You can make your own background, decorate a box, make “coffee under your cup table stains”, rain, snow, or even confetti like I did here! Plus way more fun designs! tmp_2375-PhotoGrid_1454778769414-1174672854

I love how the washi tape almost looks like design paper here. I cut the whisper white to 3-3/4″ x 5-1/2″ so you could really see the edges. After I stamped and embellished how I wanted it, I used dimensionals to pop it up. I also used a white card base cut at 5-1/2 x 8-1/2″ and scored down the middle.

The It’s My Party enamel dots are SO so cute! Love! I love to put them on like confetti! Such a sweet pop of color! I stapled on my twine using our mini stapler.

You can purchase any of the products shown from my online store HERE. Some of my favorites are the Timeless Textures stamp set, the It’s my Party Washi Tape and the It’s My Party enamel dots. Oh, can’t forget the Party with Cake stamp set too!

Thanks for stopping by!

My Stampin Up Team Color Challenge – Timeless Textures

Hi Everyone!

This is a card that I created for my upline’s bi-weekly challenge. I participate in her challenge every two weeks on our Team’s Facebook page. Being a part of this awesome group is just one of the perks of being a Demonstrator! My inspiration for this card was from Paula Dobson’s card I found on Pinterest. Pinterest is such a great, quick reference to get so many ideas for cards and projects. You can follow my Pinterest board HERE!

This is last week’s challenge as I am a bit behind posting it. I love how we have 2 weeks to work on the challenge. I just counted and I’m up to 3 challenges per week plus this one! I hope to add more but we’ll see how I do with all of these first!

For this challenge it was a color theme using Blackberry Bliss, Delightful Dijon and Mossy Meadow. This combo was sort of weird for me…I guess I was looking for some design paper to go with it! I found some in the Going Places Design Paper stack but the colors of the paper were just 2 of these and it was a swirly looking design. Cute, but I had no idea what to make. I decided to use the Timeless Textures stamps and create kind of a collage of images. I love this look! You could even do a distressed look and rough up the edges of the paper.

color challenge

I didn’t win this week but maybe with the next challenge which is a sketch challenge, actually using the Mojo Monday 433 sketch (which I already did!). Here is a close look at this card. I focused in on the Celebrate since I used the gold Wink of Stella. Love the subtle, sparkly look it adds!

Thanks for stopping by!

And….here are the products I used for this card:

Paper Craft Crew Challenge PCCCS181 – Number of Years & Valentine’s Day

Hi Everyone!

So I’m finally participating in the challenge over at the Paper Craft Crew!  Pam, aren’t you proud of me?? My hope is to be a regular participant! Pam Staples and I go way back…well back to 2011, where we first met. We were roomies for my first Stampin’ Up! Convention year, which was such a great one. (had a little drama at the house we rented from another roommate, but we all survived! ha!)  Overall it was a great experience! That’s what I’ll always remember. We’ve been Facebook friends ever since! 🙂

This was such a cute sketch that we had to play with. I had to make an Anniversary card for my sweet friend Dixie, who’s been married 33 years today! She is the sweetest little lady and makes beautiful hand-knit items. If you need a special hand-knit gift, she’s your lady! Check out her site HERE. (I’m working on her website – trying to make it better, still in the works!)

I love this stamp set Number of Years and the matching Large Number framelits. Even though my framelits are on backorder and still in the mail! You can’t really tell I “fussy” cut the 3’s can you?? Ugh, such a pain lol. I’ll be making more birthday and anniversary cards when I get the framelits! 😉 I just love this color combo though…and thanks for the great sketch Pam!

Happy Valentine’s Day too! It’s funny how the dynamics of a relationship change. Now instead of a quiet, romantic dinner for two, it ended up being a loud, fast paced spaghetti dinner for 4! It was great and fun spending the time with my loves…just not your typical V-day dinner. Even though we had a cartoon on in the car on the way, my son still fell asleep! (He’d gone all day without a nap) So when we got there my husband carried him in and he was a little cranky. He perked up though, especially after the offer of a little Sprite.

And of course I had to include a picture of THIS face….and a little selfie action. Not sure why my husband didn’t get the wear pink or red memo…

Thanks for stopping by! And Happy Valentine’s Day!

Here’s what I used to make my card:
